A Time to Remember

There’s a time for thought and a time to remember,

Since I first met you I’ve given thanks for September,

I doubt you recall upon meeting I asked your birthday,

Within my mind your date of birth had a place to stay,

A dream came to me just after I had turned sixteen,

You will meet a beautiful angel make her your queen,

I carried that dream within my soul until you were there,

Was it a dream or was I seeing the angel with long hair,

Unknown to all but I said a prayer upon leaving you,

I asked for guidance in the future and all I would do,

My life began that day, not any other time did it begin,

I became a better man and left the condition I was in,

The draft took me away to war as I knew it would soon,

I remember kissing goodbye beneath the Texas moon,

I loved you but it wasn’t the right words for me to say,

With the war over there I was afraid I was going to stay,

By the grace of God I came home but unknown to you,

Letters I wrote were hidden away as mother’s might do,

Two long years alone I had a dream with a broken heart,

Somehow you found me to say I don’t want us to part,

I have your day of birth memorized since we first met,

In fifty five years I have not forgotten your birthday yet,

I remember few days of importance but that day I know,

For without your birthday I would have no place to go.
